Prom season is underway, and Mediacom Communications and Discovery Inc. teamed up to help 55 Des Moines high school students find the perfect prom look by hosting an in-person “shopping day” that allowed each student to select and receive a new prom dress, along with monetary support and pre-paid tickets to attend their high school proms later in April.

SAY YES TO THE PROM, a charitable initiative from Discovery Inc., is in its tenth year of supporting deserving students who may find prom-related expenses to be a barrier to participation. Mediacom was selected to host the event to support students in Des Moines, Iowa’s largest school district.

Mediacom partnered with North High School and the Boys and Girls Club of Central Iowa (BGCCI). 55 junior and senior high school students participated in a “select your dress” event which provided an opportunity for each student to try on dresses, find their preferred look, and leave with their chosen dress. Students spent hours making their selections from more than 350 on-trend dresses acquired through Discovery, Inc. as a special 2022 prom collection.

“Our students were overwhelmed when they entered the showroom and saw so many racks and more than 350 colorful dresses, all with tags still attached,” said Jesus Cardoza, Community Partnership Coordinator for North High School. “It was much more than they expected, and the range of styles and sizes ensured that everyone found a dress that was distinct from others.”

Elected members of the Des Moines School Board and Des Moines City Council participated in the event luncheon and celebration runway finale. “This experience clearly gave our students a big boost of encouragement and support; it was unmistakable that community leaders and businesses like Mediacom are here to help our students succeed and be engaged.”

The SAY YES TO THE PROM event was held at the Burt Boys and Girls Club on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines. In addition to the 55 students who received prom dresses and other support during the April 7 event, Mediacom donated new prom dresses to Hoover High School in Des Moines; the Boys & Girls Club of Central Iowa; Rock Island-Milan High School in Rock Island, IL; and the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, IA.
