What is Phishing and how do I know?
Phishing generally refers to email messages that appear to come from trusted companies, but then attempt to direct you to a fake website, where you are asked to provide sensitive personal information (passwords, account numbers, credit card numbers, and so on).
This information can then be used by the creators of the website to commit identity fraud. Phishing emails are designed to appear legitimate, and the websites often look identical to the legitimate company's website.
Phishing attacks are not limited to email; they can also occur through instant messaging, in web pop-ups, or through spyware programs that may have been secretly installed on your PC.
The best way to protect yourself from becoming a victim of a phishing attack is never to respond to or reply to these messages or click on the links listed in them.
Reputable companies will never ask you for your login information through email. Likewise, websites asking you to reset your passwords due to a potential breach or as a routine security measure will direct you to log in to your account by accessing your account how you normally would and then updating it through your account management options.
