I logged into support to ask a question about on-demand but a notice at the top of the screen caught my attention. I had to order and Xplorer box to continue to watch tv?? What IS this thing?

Hello Rudy-1. If your Mediacom Tivo DVR box is not working correctly, you need to change to the Xtream1 IP video cable box. Thank you- Sean

My new Mediacom TV boxes stay on all the time and there is no power button on the remote or the unit to turn them on and off, is this by design? They get pretty warm and it concerns me a little.

Hello!
The cable boxes that you have are designed to stay on and the power button does only power the TV on and off. The boxes being warm to the touch is not abnormal and as long as they are not so hot you cannot touch them, it shouldn't be a cause for concern.
